Luca McDonnell
Born 1999
Resides Clarkeville, Canterbury
Art is a very personal experience for Luca McDonnell, allowing him to give permanence to moments, events and emotions; "once they exist outside of me, I can let them go."
Guiding Luca's practice is his deep interest in human relationships and the visible and invisible forces that shape our behaviour and decisions. His fascination with tiny objects, circles and spheres gives way to the sculptoral pieces he has created for our latest exhibition, Two-Way Street.
Gathering his experiences and connection with his mentor, the late figurative expressionist painter Philip Trusttum, Luca foregoes his usual diminutive scale - for what can only be considered monumental in comparison - and creates works anchored in his expression of respect and admiration for Philip.
Luca is currently in his Honours year at Ilam School of Fine Arts Canterbury University, majoring in Sculpture. Prior to his fine arts degree, Luca gained a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Finance.
