Mum & Dad's Garden at Night by Salome Tanuvasa

20 June - 20 July 2024

Introducing Tongan-Sāmoan artist Salome Tanuvasa in her inaugural solo South Island show, 'Mum & Dad's Garden at Night.' These new paintings by Salome reference the plants and objects of her parents' garden environment in Panmure, East Auckland. "I have paintings that reference evening photographs of my parents' backyard as well as night drawings I've quickly sketched, documenting objects and plants that caught my eye. This then translates to shapes and colours I admire." Salome often responds to her immediate environment in her work, gathering inspiration from familiar places, objects, shapes, and colours.

With this new body of work, she has also gained inspiration from the shapes and colours of 20th century German painter Oskar Schlemmer. Salome works in various media, including painting, textiles, drawing, photography and video. Exhibiting since 2012 she has work in both private and public collections, nationally and internationally.

Salome lives in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland and gained her Master Degree at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, in 2014.
