Bing Dawe | Canterbury Museum - 'The Water Project'

In 2017, Ashburton Art Gallery Director, Shirin Khosraviani invited selected artists to research and explore the cultural, conceptual and imaginative qualities of the rivers, lakes, wetlands and freshwater systems of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Their challenge was to create art which honoured, questioned and highlighted the community’s relationship with water. The selected artists – Peter Trevelyan, Jenna Packer, Phil Dadson, Dani Terrizzi, Ross Hemera, Jacqui Colley, Euan Macleod, Brett Graham, Elizabeth Thomson, Bing Dawe, Greg O’Brien, Kate Woods and Bruce Foster – responded with works across a range of mediums including video installations, paintings, printmaking, photography and sculpture.

The exhibition was shortlisted as a finalist in the 2018 Cawthron Foundation New Zealand River Story Awards, the first art exhibition to reach the finals.
