Michael Hight | 'Tributary' Artist Talk Milford Gallery

"Tributary" is an homage to the South Island and its landscapes.

Its reference points are various rivers. Historically these can be seen as arteries or as a life blood for the surrounding land - highways as well as barriers and agents of destruction.

The paintings in this show offer two distinct responses to these geographical focal points and reflect the two streams that make up my recent practice: the harsh daylight of the beehive paintings and the darker nocturnal assemblage of objects and images gathered along the way.

The seemingly disparate bodies are linked by the common thread of human interaction with the land and often juxtapose the intensely domestic with the epic.
